Gospel Part 3/5 : Substitution

Hey, everyone! So, well, I got to go to church this week! Really glad, too! :D Got a bit of a message I needed out of the lesson and also ran into a friend. :)

To start, well Harvest does actually do their own blog for at least the Sunday services (not sure if they do youth ones or not). So, if I miss a week (like I missed last week and will unfortunately be missing next week as I will be in Sturgeon Falls visiting family) or you'd rather hear about the lessons from an adult, then you can check it out at http://www.harvestbarrie.ca/10584/blog/blog_id/223295/Blog-For-Those-With-Ears

So, this week was the third week in the F1rst Things (or, as I call it, GOSPEL) series. So, it was "Substitution". We looked at Romans 5:6-11. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%205:6-11&version=NIV (note, I give links to NIV, but you can change the version on that site : I typically use the ESV but NIV seems to be more common)

To begin, we need to recognize where we were to begin (verse 6). That was touched on during last week's lesson; sin. We were SO estranged. Our sin separated us from God. We were sinners... and if that's not bad enough, being sinnners made us enemies to God - ENEMIES TO OUR MAKER. Our sin made us WEAK and UNGODLY. I want to just focus on "ungodly" for a minute. We've all heard it a billion times before, but I think that our hearing it so much causes us to skip by and not really let the meaning sink in. Ungodly. Unlike God. Thoroughly unlike God. We are not even CLOSE to being like God. We were helpless and lost. I really like the way my pastor put it; we're like turtles that have been flipped on our backs. We've got our legs in the air flailing around trying to right ourselves. That's what sin does to us.

Despite this, God revealed His love for us (verses 7-8a). Despite the fact that there was such a huge gap between us and we were such sinners, God loved us, as He always will. He loves us SO much that He sent His only son to DIE for us so that we may have eternal life instead of the eternal hell we deserve.

Sending His son was how God shows us His love for us (verse 8b). Jesus was the only one who could have come and died for our sins to save us. God loves us enough that, despite it meaning it HAD to be His son, He still sent him down to earth to die for us.

Why did Jesus have to come die? It was to appease God's wrath (verse 9). God was angry because of our sin. Now, though, he is no longer angry at us because Jesus has wiped us clean. We are completely on the clear from God's wrath. We don't have to worry that He is mad at us ever. Essentially God saves us from Himself.

God has reconciled ourselves to Him (verses 10-11). He has restored us to Him. Jesus bridged that gap so that we may know God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." Jesus died once so that we are restored forever.

So, we all hear it all the time; "Jesus died for you." It's like how we always hear "Jesus loves you" or "God made you wonderfully"; we let the meaning drift past because we hear it so often. We have been given the amazing gift of salvation. If that's not a reason on its own to smile, I don't know what is. So chin up! Live this week knowing and acting like you have a God that loves you as much as our God does.

That's all for now! God bless! YOU ARE LOVED!

Youth on September 25, 2012

Hi, everyone! Sorry I didn't manage to get this post up, yet. Not as an excuse, but the reason was a lot of homework the past few nights. So, sorry this took so long!

So, this week ar youth, it was neat because we actually had a grade 12 guy preaching. He did a really great job and it was SO cool to see a youth up there preaching to their peers! The lesson was on how our salvation gives us hope. I know for me, personally, who's been going through a bit of a rough patch in life, it was really encouraging just to be reminded of it all. The section we studied was 1 Peter 1:3-12 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Peter%201:3-12%20&version=NIV1984)

The first point was that our salvation rests in Jesus' act of dying for us (verse 3), and not out acts. We are all sinners and we can't "earn our way into heaven" by being "good people". God does want us to obey His commands because we are His image-bearers, but we do that out of love for God, not to try and get our pass into heaven. When we get up there, we will have to face God for all our sins, but it will not be some tally list of "you did ___# of things wrong... you gotta' cut ___ to get into heaven. Sorry, bud, but you're gonna' be taking a lifelong trip to hell it seems. NEXT... " We have the gift of salvation there for us; we simply need to truly choose to recieve it.

The next point was that EACH AND EVERY one of us has an AMAZING future before us (verses 4-5). This future mostly means in heaven, really. As verse 4 says, it is "an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade". So, we have to wait for it. However, as we wait, God guides and protects us. Verse 5 says we are those "who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time". God is not just telling us that we have a great prize ahead, but it's entirely on our shoulders to get there. He's like a coach for life; a GOOD coach. A good coach doesn't just say "well, the finish line is WAYYYYYY over that mountain. Good luck reaching it!" and then sit back and relax; a good coach goes "Alright, you may not be able to see it yet, but you trust me enough to know that there IS a finish line over there. I will go beside you the whole way until we reach it. I will let you be your own guide when you wish, but if you ask it of me, I will be there to help."

The third point was about not sweating the hard times (verses 6-9). We ALL have hard times in our lives. That can be something as little as a really long night up late doing work/homework to trying to take your own life becuase you've just given up on life. Everybody faces their own trials. There are some important things to remember in these trials.
1)Even when we are going through rough times, we need to be thankful to God. You might be wondering "Why should I be thankful to a God who is putting me through miserable things?" Well, firstly, He sent his ONLY son to DIE for YOU. THAT is how much He loves you. Secondly... well, second is our second point.
2)Trials are a testing of our faith. As verse seven says "These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed." God uses trials to test us. He wants to make sure we really do have faith, because when we do, our faith and God should be the first things we fall back to when life gets rough.
3)It takes fires to purify gold. Our goal in life is really to become as much like God (in terms of being good, not in terms of being all-powerful or all-knowing). We need trials to grow and shape us and bring us closer to God. Just like gold has to be put through extreme heat and flames to be purified, we have to be "burned" to be more "pure".

The final point is that we really need to be able to understand and also appreciate what an AMAZING gift our salvation is. This refers to verses 10-12 which say "10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things."
Our salvation is the only real true salvation. There are so many false ones out there, but ours is real. There where prophets who never saw any of this happen like we did, but still believed. We have all the evidence of God right in front of us in the Bible, and yet people still do not believe. But we are blessed to have that advantage. Also, as it says at the end "Even angels long to look into these things".  I feel that puts it into perspective a bit; angels who serve God want to be able to see/know what we see/know.
Also, well, JESUS DIED FOR US. He loves each of us SO much. If you were the ONLY person on earth, he still would have given his life for you. Giving away your life to someone is a pretty big gift. We can never pay it back to him, but we can still appreciate knowing what he really gave us.

So, well, my little personal thoughts down here. As I said before, I found this majorly encouraging. Mostly the third point, that is. The last little while has been rough, but, looking back, I can see God with me every step of the way. Also, well, I can certainly say that these "fires" have been "purifiying" me. I've been changing a LOT lately; and I really do mean a LOT. For those people who knows me personally, you'd likely agree that the girl who left school for summer in June is not the same one who came back in September. God's been using these trails to test and shape me. Also, I found that He has been what I fall back to more and more now then ever. Before where I would turn to family or friends first, I've started turning to God first. So, though the past little while has been rough, they have also been an experience I would not want to have op-ted out of if it means I came out the same person I went in as.

For now, that's all! Feel free to comment thoughts! :D
God bless! YOU ARE LOVED!

P.S. If you are AT ALL interested, I have written two songs recently to/about God. They are on my personal blog (http://emeraldsandstones.blogspot.com) I'm not a proffesional writer or anything, but if you want, feel free to check them out! :)  They're in the posts "Life and Writing Songs" and "Move in Me"!

Quick Update!

So,  I most unforunately did not get to go to church this Sunday. My mom and my sister were both really sick, so, they needed to stay home, and I can't exactly drive myself since I have no liscense or I would have. Anyways, I will try and find something else to put up on weeks where I don't get to go.
Also, I have changed my mind about doing two seperate blogs; one for church and one for youth. I am just gonna' do one for both. Hopefully I can try and make it easy enough to distinguish between the two for you all.
So, I DO have youth group tonight! :D I am definitely going so I shall hopefully be able to update ya'll tomorrow on what was taught tonight (I'd do it tonight, but, well, I get home WAY too late as is, and have to get up way too early, so I don't want to make it any later than need be...)

Well, also, food for thought, for, well, whoever is reading this; Colossians 3:2 "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."
I will admit it's a struggle for me, as I bet it is for everyone. I mean, we LIVE on earth, so how are we supposed to NOT think about it? We all get caught up in the here and now sometimes, but I like this verse as a reminder. It's just a little reminder that we need to not worry so much about what's going on here (relationship drama, school, work, etc) but we need to think on God. I know for me, once I really sit down and just forget about all the things going on around me and focus on God, a lot of things fall into far better perspective. So, just think about it, I guess. It helps me; I hope it helps you. Just focus on God, becuase everything here on this earth won't matter when you die, but your relationship with God will be of the utmost importance.

Well, that's all 'til tomorrow (that's the plan anyways)!!!! God bless!
YOU ARE LOVED!

Gospel Part 1/5

So, Harvest is starting into its new year, which means a new study. We are currently doing a five-part study on the gospel, what it is, and what we need to understand in order to truly grasp it (God, Sin, Substitution, Believe, Life). All five parts need to be grasped and understood or it's incomplete. So, here goes part one....

Firstly, God. There's a God, and deep down somewhere inside them, or way up at the surface, everyone knows that. Here are 3 reasons of proof that clearly acknowledge God's existence.

Creation on its own should prove of God's existence. Romans 1:18-20 says "18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse." It quite simply says in 19 "since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them." In 20 it talks about how his invisible qualities are clearly seen. There really is no reason that people should not be able to see God's work in this. They choose not to see His fingerprints because they look at it trying to find a way to show why there is no God, instead of allowing it to show them that there is. It's like walking into a crime scene and being convinced that the criminal is NOT who everyone says it is. You dust for fingerprints and find the person's prints EVERYWHERE. If you still choose not to believe it was clearly their doing, you will be left going in circles trying to prove what you want to. You simply will end up going nowhere. God has left his fingerprints on every piece of this universe, from the smallest intricate piece of DNA, to the largest planet out there. He is undeniably existant.

Secondly, your heart can tell you God exists. Or, rather the longing in your heart. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says "He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end." As humans, and followers of God, we have a LONGING to know what God has done and will do. We also recognize, the more we long for God, that we do not belong here and we can not be truly satisfied here. Hebrews 11 offers us many great examples of people who truly lived by faith. After listing some it says this in verse 13: "All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth." These people recognized we don't belong here and this is NOT our home. We can't be truly fulfilled here on earth. We spend our time trying to fulfill ourselves, whether it be through entertainment, relationships, or anything else. God is the only thing that can truly fulfill us and our hearts long for Him because of that.

Finally, we know God exists because He's not really that far from us; we just like to complicate things. Acts 17:22-31 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts%2017:22-31&version=NIV1984) has an interesting story. Basically Paul is in Athens and finds that, amongst all the temples, there is one that is dedicated to an unknown God. These people did not know WHO this God was, but they knew He was out there. I can't say much more on this point, because, well, I honestly don't feel confident that I understood it well enough to say more. All I know is that it doesn't have to be complicated. God offers us a relationship with Him that we just have to accept. There's not a "but you have to pay me back" or anything (we really can't, anyways, since He needs nothign we could give), it's just a simple gift. If you're reading this, and perhaps haven't accepted that gift, but decide you want to, I encourage you to go out to the nearest church (or youth group if you're in that age group) ASAP and talk to a pastor. Also, if you know people, whether they be family, friends, or total stranger you heard about who doesn't know God, I encourage you to pray for them.... If you want me to pray for them, them perhaps comment their name (just first name so no personal info is all over the internet) on here and I will pray for them. ☺ It is worth grieving over those who are unsaved; in fact we should grieve (Romans 9:1-5 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%209:1-5&version=NIV1984)... I can say I shed quite a few tears today in church when we were asked to pray for our non-believing family and friends. It tears me apart to think of them not coming to Heaven when their time here is up...

Well, I think that's most of the important stuff I have to say on this matter! God bless! You are LOVED! ♥

Hello!

Hello, all! So, if you know about this from Facebook, you know the basics; I am using this as a Bible Study, essentially. I have found that, even between church on Sundays, Christian school all week, a youth group Tuesday and a youth group Friday I am NOT getting enough of God. I realize I could do this alone, but I thought I'd do it on here to help out anyone who perhaps feels the same as I do; they have a thirst for God.
Here's how it's gonna' work (I hope): Every Sunday after church (or Monday if I can in no way get it up on Sunday) I am gonna' blog on here about whatever it was we talked about in church. I will essentially re-tell the lesson as best I can and then voice my thoughts on it. I know this doesn't seem like a "bible study" because I'm just using what I got from church, right? Thing is, I want to hear your comments back (if you're willing) and I really hope that what I post will have SOME message for you from God, even if it's just to get you deeper into His word. Also, I figure, since I am not a pastor, I should use something that was taught by one, making me less likely to make a major mistake on here and lead anyone away from God or anything else awful like that. (I hope that makes sense?) The only part that will be my thoughts will be, well, my thoughts on the sermon. If you want, I encourage you to comment back to this post! If God's working in your life I'd love to hear how! And if you are at all curious to hear how he is working in mine, you can check out my personal blog at http://emeraldsandstones.blogspot.com

I will also be trying to start this up for lessons from my Tuesday youth group! I haven't gotten it going yet, so, well, on Weds or Thurs, if you are interested, go from this blog to my page on blogger and under my blogs, along with this one and "Emeralds and Stones" (my personal one) you should find a third, assuming I have managed to start it up!

So, I shall post the first post (for today) as a seperate post.

Otherwise, well, God bless! You are LOVED! ♥
